Universalist Unitarian Church of Riverside and the Sherman Indian High School
Years ago our church had some small connection with Sherman Indian High School. On June 1, 1898. the Board of Trustees discussed the "…Indian school entertainment…" In April, 1904, the trustees voted to pay J. G. Hunter 50¢ per month "…for the purpose of religious instruction at the Sherman Institute." In November, 1904, they voted to pay 75¢ a month "…for the salary paid to the Sunday School Teacher at Sherman Institute." Mr. Hunter was secretary of the YMCA at the time, but there is no indication that he was a member of the church.
One of our members who works at Sherman Indian High School told me there was a picture of our church and of Dr. Deere in the 1901 time capsule; it was opened early when an old building was torn down. She put me in touch with Lorene Sisquoc, Curator of the Sherman Museum. From this contact the church was invited to submit whatever items it wished to be put into the 2001 time capsule which was dedicated at the centennial celebration held on Saturday, October 13, 2001.
I wrote up a history of the congregation and the building and our Minister wrote a letter telling of our hopes and goals for the next one hundred years. We included the Sunday bulletin for October 14 with its insert, a copy of our hymn Spirit of Life, and the pamphlet, We Are UUs.
Our Minister attended the dedication ceremony, and one of our members who works for the local paper wrote the news article about the centennial celebration, so UUCR was well represented at this community event.
