Where's the River?
"In our correspondence with friends from Riverside the literature was very attractive, even going to the extent of a newspaper cut of a steamer plowing its way up the Santa Ana river, a vision we never saw materialized. Our first sight of the river was when we crossed it in a buggy, the water scarcely wetting the wheels."
The Autobiography of Rev. G.H. Deere, 1908
It's been 127 years since the first minister of our congregation crossed the Santa Ana and still no river has materialized here in Riverside, CA. Yet, here in our congregation we are quite fond of saying, "The Universalist Unitarian Church of Riverside: From This the River Flows..." So are we hydrologically challenged? Or do we mean something else all together?
We Unitarian Universalists in the Inland Empire know our 'elegant little sandstone church' is a sacred place where we craft the relationships of fellowship and stewardship which flow out beyond our doors and into the world. Our spiritual practice unites scientific truths and our passions for justice and peace in an dynamic and active congregation. We are here to compassionately care and support one another in the individual joys and sorrows of life, while seeking and finding clarity of personal meaning and purpose.
From This the River Flows? Absolutely!
